I’ve seen it firsthand, players from every level making the leap to USL, MLS Next Pro, or even overseas. Pro coaches aren’t just looking at the D1 bracket. They’re looking for players who can play, full stop.
Take Nathan Opoku, he spent the Fall 2021 season playing for Lindsey Wilson College in the NAIA. Fast forward just over a year to January 2023, and he had joined Premier League club Leicester City.
The key is development. If you’re getting regular minutes, high-level coaching, and competing against strong opponents, you’re in a great spot. My Experience: NAIA vs. NCAA DII
NCAA DII soccer programs are viewed more favorably than NAIA ones. Yet, I had a terrible soccer experience playing DII, transferred to the NAIA and loved it. Nametags are overrated.
My DII school certainly had more resources, but the quality of soccer and coaching was far superior in my NAIA experience. It wasn’t until I transferred that I truly felt challenged and tested daily.
Looking back, I definitely made the right decision to transfer to play in the NAIA. When it comes to NAIA vs. NCAA DII soccer – there’s only one winner for me.
